The first step :

Start this lesson by linking the word “handshake” to an action on the dog’s mind. Choose a time for your dog’s attention, and when the dog is in a calm mood.

The second step :

Gently pick up your dog, say “shook hands” with a strong positive voice, then gently put the dog’s paw in your hand. After doing this work your dog should be praised. Initially, the dog will be disoriented and troubled towards this new procedure, but do it over and over again anyway, and always follow through with praise.

The third step :

Once the dog understands what you want from him, it’s time to take the lesson. Put a favorite gift or toy in one hand, hold the other hand, and say the word “shook hands”. At first, the dog may not be able to understand what you want; Gently choose the dog’s paw again, perform the work, praise the dog, and then give the dog a reward.

The fourth step:

After some time, the dog will begin to associate the “handshake” with the procedure, with reward and praise. Continuously follow up with these steps at least 3 times a day, every day. Until the dog is able to put its paw in your hand several times when you say “shake hands”, stop using the reward and just praise and foreplay as a kind of reward.

Step Five:

Continue to perform this “handshake” procedure at least once a day, as training the dog to shake hands helps to continue to strengthen the attachment. This dog skill remains stable
